Mission & Vision
To address the critical teacher shortage in the areas of math and science across California and the nation, the Teaching and Learning Interchange or TLI (www.teachinginterchange.org) has developed online resources to address the professional development needs of uncredentialed, under-prepared and pre-service teachers. Our research data shows that the TLI has been proven to support teachers at any stage of professional development. Bridging time, space and geography through using innovative internet video-based technologies, the TLI provides:
The TLI subject-matter preparation courses support candidates to pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) required to enroll in a teacher training program. The Pedagogy in Practice video case studies give a classroom context to subject matter by allowing under-prepared teachers to observe complete lessons in real California classrooms. The video cases include over 200 downloadable teaching strategy resources that viewers can immediately adapt to their own practice and curriculum to support their day-to-day teaching.
In each video case module classroom teachers deconstruct their teaching practice by sharing with how they break the subject matter standards for the year, day-to-day and finally into mind-sized lessons. Each case includes videos of those learning units in action, teacher reflections on assessment, classroom management, lesson planning and learning strategies to provide the viewer with essential resources for reflection on their own practice. During the grant period, online community tools and video conferencing with mentors allowed for the necessary dialog, questioning and discussion regarding the cases. The modules include a transcript of the classroom dialog, downloadable standards-based resources and online mentor-moderated discussions of the video cases. The resources and reflection question urge the candidate to consider ways to adapt the strategies and techniques for their teaching practice.
Simultaneously, participants in the TLI work toward meeting the GPRA indicators. Of the teacher preparation programs that participated in the TLI, 100% continue to use the TLI to supplement their subject matter competency training using our best practices techniques for delivering online content resulting in a concomitant growth in users’ proficiency with technology. The video case studies modules each demonstrate the effective use of technology in the classroom and provide downloadable resources that allow participants to replicate the activities in their own classrooms. Finally, our data confirms that users who were previously unfamiliar with the use of online technologies, are more proficient in its use after participating in our services.
Research has shown that the greatest and most powerful way to retain teachers in the profession is to provide support from other professionals, to break the isolation of the classroom. Examining the practice of accomplished teachers and discussing their classroom management, student demographics and their resultant differentiated instruction is the most highly requested form of professional development by teachers. As the TLI videos are made available on the California gigabit network, teacher candidates across the state will be able view National Board certified and master teachers practices while conversing with an accomplished teacher in their field and to discuss those with their mentor.
Several unexpected benefits were perceived by our collaborative exchange members: The TLI has demonstrated that video cases are an effective tool for spanning space and time to provide support for teachers; the products produced are in full alignment with NCLB; the video case format is adaptable and replicable for any content and should receive further exploration for additional uses.
In March 2004, the TLI was awarded a 2004 Corporation for Education Network Infrastructure in California (CENIC) “Gigabit or Bust” award for Education. “The CENIC On the Road to a Gigabit Awards honor California visionaries who apply network technology in innovative ways [and] showcase the pioneering ideas of today's visionaries and the promise of tomorrow's Internet.” Details can be found at www.cenic.org/publications/cenictoday/ctv9_2.pdf
(CENIC was itself honored by congress on March 15, 2004 with a certificate of special congressional recognition for the One Gigabit or Bust™ Initiative.)
On July 11, 2005, the TLI’s Pedagogy in Practice case studies were awarded a 5-Star rating in the MERLOT multimedia educational resource library in the Teacher Education category during a peer review. “Content quality” and “potential for teaching effectiveness” and “ease of use for both students and faculty” were evaluated. - Online test preparation courses to support teachers to acquire subject-matter competency aligned with California’s rigorous state subject matter competency tests. These tests are required to enter into a teacher credential program and are used by districts certify credentialed teachers for NCLB compliance.
- High quality online video-based teaching dilemmas or “case studies” to explore subject matter content teaching and learning. In addition, the science case scenarios emphasize pedagogy and strategies for teaching English learners. The math cases include strategies for differentiation and accommodations for special needs learners.
